It’s A Wonderful Fireman by Jennifer Bernard

Wonderful Fireman coverDean Mulligan hates Christmas. He also has a soft spot for Lizzie Breen. Trouble is- Lizzie is the younger sister of his firefighting coworker, Fred, who has made it clear he better stay far, far away. Mulligan also believes he’s not worthy of a good relationship.

Lizzie loves Mulligan but he’s is a tough, stubborn, pig-headed fireman who doesn’t feel love is in his wheelhouse. When Lizzie is offered a job in Canada, she must decide if she goes and starts over, or stays and fights for Mulligan’s heart.

But one fire could change everything… Mulligan finds himself lodged under a giant Christmas tree in a burnt out Christmas store after falling through the roof. He quickly realizes he must come to terms with more than just his dislike of all things red and green or he may lose Lizzie forever.

This is the first book I’ve read by Jennifer Bernard and I can officially say I’m hooked. Even though this was only a holiday novella, it was fantastic. This novella wraps up the Bachelor Fireman series, but I followed along just fine.  These fireman sure do they live up to their name – hot, witty, stubborn, tough…and I really only get to know one of them in this book!!

Wonderful Fireman is a quick and easy read and despite Mulligan’s best efforts…it did put me in the holiday spirit. While there’s nothing light or fun about Mulligan’s troubled childhood, it is written in a way that allows the reader to fall for him just as Lizzie does. Also of note – readers will love the various interactions between Mulligan and Lizzie…including one very hot bedroom scene.

I very much look forward to catching up with ALL of these sizzling bachelors as I fire through the rest of the Bachelor Fireman series.  **ENTER TO WIN A FULL SET HERE:

Here’s a peek at Mulligan & Lizzie…

“You shouldn’t be flirting with the new probie. If Fred was here, he’d tell you.” Mulligan looked very sure of that fact—arrogant, even. Lizzie assessed the bump in his nose, the way his biceps bulged from the sleeves of his T-shirt, his air of absolute assurance. Another girl might be intimidated, but Lizzie had grown up with four brothers who’d become soldiers and a firefighter. She’d outgrown intimidation by the age of six.

“Why are you so suspicious of Ace? He’s part of the brotherhood, isn’t he?”

“Not yet,” Mulligan said with decisive finality, as if everything had now been settled. “You stay here, and I’ll tell him to get lost.”

“You will not!” She grabbed his arm as he brushed past her. It felt like grabbing a log, that’s how thick and strong his forearm was. “It’s none of your business.”

“It is my business. Freddie’s my business. We’re tight.”

“If you were that tight, you’d know that his only involvement with my love life is feeding me ice cream after a breakup,” she snapped. “Stay out of it, Mulligan. You have some nerve, you really do. I’ve never even met you before, and you’re trying to tell me who to sleep with.”

He stopped dead. She kept her hand on his arm because it felt so good. His tendons tightened under her touch, and she saw his jaw flex.

A quick flick of his wrist, and suddenly she was pressed against him, chest to chest, thighs to thighs. Sensation poured through her; it felt like standing next to a volcano. “I’m not telling you who to sleep with. I’m telling you who not to sleep with.”

“Oh, really?” she snapped, furious. “Who should I not sleep with?”

“Anyone but me.”

FREE ME by Laurelin Paige

Banner FBOne of my favorite authors, Laurelin Paige has a new book coming out!!! Ms. Paige wrote the amazing “Fixed” trilogy that I flew through in about 3 days, now she’s releasing a duet based on one of the characters!  I’m SO excited!!

FreeMeCoverHer story began long before she started working at The Sky Launch…

Screw fairytales. The only reward Gwen Anders got from her rough childhood was a thick skin and hard heart. She’s content with her daily grind managing a top NYC nightclub—Eighty-Eighth Floor. So hers isn’t a happily ever after. She doesn’t believe in those anyway.

Then she meets J.C.

The rich, smooth talking playboy is the sexiest thing that Gwen has ever encountered, but she’s not interested in a night-in-shining latex. But when a family tragedy pushes her to the brink, it’s J.C. who’s there to teach her a new method of survival, one based on following primal urges and desires. His no-strings-attached lessons require her to abandon her constant need for control. Her carefully built walls are obliterated.

Gwen discovers there’s a beautiful world outside her prison. Freedom is exhilarating—and terrifying. When she starts to feel something for J.C., she fears for her heart. Especially as she realizes that he has secrets of his own. Secrets that don’t want to set him free.

BOOK ONE OF TWO. This series can be read alone or with the Fixed Trilogy.  (Bloggers note, READ THE FIXED TRILOGY!!!  It’s amazing!!)
About Laurelin: Laurelin Paige is the NY Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of the Fixed Trilogy. She’s a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Mad Men and the Walking Dead, or dreaming of Adam Levine.

The Loner by Kate Moore

Blog Tour Banner

The first book in the new “The Canyon Club” series introduces us to Will Sloan, a tall, dark and handsome tech guru who has recently sold his company for bucu bucks. For what seems like his entire adult life, Will has been infatuated with Annie James who was a young secretary at his hated high school, Canyon Prep. Will fell hard for Annie at the young age of 18 and never quite got over the heartbreak of her dismissal.

Fast forward 10 years to the class reunion of the Canyon Prep class of 2005. The school is in the red and in desperate need of a bailout. One of Will’s classmates, Josh Huntington, is in charge of fundraising and knows Will has a major bankroll and a major soft spot for Annie. As many things have changed, one has remained the same…Will still loves Annie. But does Annie feel the same? Did she ever have feelings for him? When forces throw the couple together again they must navigate the troubled waters of the past and decide if there is a future.

TheLoner_coverThis is a new author for me but she is certainly not new to the romance writing scene. Moore does a nice job of introducing the main characters quickly and gave enough information about their past to intrigue me within the first chapter.

While the concept of the book is relatively rote – rich man, hurt woman – the history shared with Will and Annie makes this a unique read. In addition to that the cast of supporting characters, mainly Josh Huntington, have their own original story lines intertwined with Will and Annie’s.

At the heart of this novel is a story of redemption and hope, which is perfect for this time of year. That said, this is not a holiday read but it does lend itself to those same warm and fuzzy holiday feelings. And yes, there is sex, but it’s primarily “behind closed doors” making this a good read for anyone uninterested in reading racy sex scenes, but still gets your heart racing a time or two.

There are a few words of caution I would give readers – this is not a “quick read”. I say that because there are parts in which the characters drift back to their pasts and where the scene quickly changes from past to present forcing the reader to slow down and (for me) sometimes re-read a page or passage again to gain clearer understanding.

Also, as I stated before, Josh has a story line brewing in this book (which will continue in Book 2 of the series) but it does take away some of the focus on Will and Annie. While I appreciate Moore is attempting to introduce us to Josh, it is at times challenging to keep up with all the ins and outs of everyone’s lives.

I do look forward to Book 2 in this series, Golden Boy, featuring Josh Huntington and his new tenant (also introduced in The Loner) which is set to release in early 2015.

EXCERPT from The Loner

When the door opened, he shifted, flattening a palm against each wall, blocking her way. She halted in front of him and squared her shoulders.

“Nice lace.”

She blushed instantly, and her response sent a hot flash to his groin.

She recovered quicker than he did. “Do you know why Josh Huntington threw us together tonight?”

“His deep devotion to Canyon.”

A look of disgust crossed her face. “Josh doesn’t do anything that isn’t purely in his own self-interest.”

He was glad to hear her say it. At least she wasn’t taken in by the guy. His own questions were pressing on him again. “Why did you leave Canyon?”

“Why did you come here tonight?”

He kept his palms flat against each wall. “Are you kidding? New Directions for Canyon? I’m the only guy who doesn’t see the place as a holy shrine. You want to hear my idea for Canyon? Sell it to developers, bring in the wrecking ball and the backhoes, and give hundreds of poor kids a full college ride.”

“An excellent plan. Hostile, but practical.” She tried to slip by him, and he leaned forward, bringing his face within inches of hers.

“Make me less hostile.” He reached out a hand and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. Her whole body shivered at the touch, and he felt gut-punched. He forced himself to press for the answers he wanted. “Why didn’t you answer that letter?”

He caught a puzzled look in her eyes, but the men’s room door opened.

“This is not the time or the place for this conversation.”

“Come with me. You can explain it.”

Voices intruded. Two men stepped into the hallway and halted. Will took his hands from the walls. Deep brown eyes pleaded with him. He took her arm, leading her down the hall.

“You were eighteen,” she said in a low voice.

“I knew my mind. You pretended not to know yours.”

“You had an amazing college opportunity ahead of you.”

“You didn’t believe in me. You believed in guys like Moreland, but not in me. You thought I wouldn’t make it.”

“You had not even begun to live. I was a widow. My husband had been dead barely a year. A year.”

“You saw where I lived,” he said quietly. “You were afraid to take a chance on a nobody like me.”

“I did what I had to do, what I thought was right. And look at you. You’ve done well. Without me. You can’t deny it.” She slipped out of his hold and headed across the patio.

A smart man would let her go. He decided to be smart.

Saving Our Hearts ~ a review

Blog Tour Banner

His little chest rises and falls with each breath he struggles to take. The wires and tubes attached to his body are things I see every day, but somehow, the sight of them attached to this little body… my son’s body… well, it takes on a completely new meaning and tears at my heart in a way I never imagined.

Laying in the incubator, even with all the medical supplies on him, he’s perfect. The mass of dark hair just like mine was surprising; I honestly thought our baby would have auburn hair like his gorgeous mother… my Gracie. His button nose and precious lips ensure he’s without doubt the cutest baby in existence. Although, that may just be the biased opinion of a father who is completely smitten and undeniably head over heels in love with his first born child. I wish Gracie were here to see how beautiful he is.

With a heavy sigh, I take my seat beside his crib and continue my vigil over my son. Everyone’s growing frustrated with me because they want to know his name. They’re sick of calling the baby him, or baby Tierney, and I understand their annoyance. I really do, but there’s no way I’m going to make that decision on my own. I guess three days without a name isn’t normal, but then the way he arrived into the world wasn’t normal. It certainly wasn’t the way Gracie and I envisioned things would go.

Saving our Hearts is the MUCH anticipated follow up to Rhythm of My Heart and I was SO pleased with how the series continued.  The book picks up where the first left off (these are NOT standalone books!  If you’ve not read “Rhythm” stop reading this review right now!!  Then go download it and read it!) and had me tearing through the first chapter to find the fate of Gracie and the baby.  Don’t worry, you’ll get answers very quickly…thankfully!!

Saving our Hearts is not just another romance novel.  It incorporates many story lines to continue the journey of Cole and Gracie including those who are trying desperately to thwart their relationship and those doing everything in their power to support them.  The couple must overcome many obstacles throughout their story including a sadistic ex-boyfriend, a hostage situation, and a meddling bitch of an ex-fiancee.  Cole and Gracie manage it all through love, the support of their family and friends and lots and lots of sex!!

My favorite parts of both books is the unfailing love Cole has for Gracie, and visa versa.  Not only is Cole amazingly hot, he’s amazingly romantic and cares for Gracie in a way that every woman wants to be cared for.  It’s also wonderful to read their story from a few characters’ perspectives.  While other authors struggle to make this type of reading easy to follow, Reed does it perfectly, and by doing so she builds a wonderful world of characters that will make you laugh, cry and yes…blush!!

Not only does each chapter bring about a challenge for the couple, it also tells the story of other relationships brewing within the group.  I love that Reed is introducing us to new couples as she plans out the next books in her series including:

Book 3 – A Home for my Heart – Ashley and Sam

Book 4 – Fighting for my Heart – Charlie

Book 5 – Surrendering my Heart – April

Reed also plans on possibly publishing two other books…let’s all cross our fingers for this to happen!!

The Truest of Words by Georgina Guthrie

Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken…
(Sonnet 116)

~Chapter 33 “The Truest of Words”

In the lovely conclusion to the romance that has captured hearts everywhere, we follow Daniel and Aubrey on what may be their most difficult journey to date – real life.

The Truest of Words picks up where Better Deeds than Words left us – the semester is finally over and as Aubrey’s graduation nears, the love sick couple finds themselves navigating the stress of bringing their relationship out into the open and the repercussions it could have for not only them, but those associated with them.

In this book we get to see much more of Daniel and the wonderfully handsome, romantic, OCD perfectionist he is. Daniel begins to focus on himself hoping that with Aubrey’s help he can become more of the man he used to be before accusations of misconduct were flung his way during his time at Oxford. Aubrey, on the other hand, is busy juggling the demands of her new boss, examining what life will be like after university and contemplating her future with Daniel and his ever growing (and dare I say meddling?) family.

The overriding theme in this book is certainly “love above all”. It seems that no matter what is tossed their way Aubrey and Daniel have a way of using their love and mutual respect for one another as a safe place they can always come back to. Demons certainly rise up in their lives and the way they tackle them together brings their characters full circle in many ways.

While this book has a slightly different “tone” than the other two, it’s still an enjoyable read and you’ll certainly want to see how the story of true love wraps up.
