Cover Reveal ~ Defying All Odds

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00004]

The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.

-Ernest Hemingway

Since day one, Celeste Logan has had a string of bad luck—no, scratch that. Her past is so tragic, anyone would think she’s been irrevocably cursed. But this is no paranormal story…it’s her real f*cking life.

Fortunately, it’s not all bad and there are people in her life who make it worth living. Though the past will never be completely forgotten, she has moved on and beat the hell out of the statistics. But just when it seems things are about as good as they’re going to get, disaster strikes—again.

Can what’s broken be fixed this time, or was she ever fully mended in the first place? And will the past catch up to her, or is the present what Celeste should fear most?

***This contemporary romance novel contains adult subject matter. Not intended for young readers.

Hey! Long time, no see!

Hey gang!!  It’s been a while but it’s true what they say “no news is good news”!  Here’s some rambling and information for you…

It’s been just over 4 months since I was diagnosed and I can honestly say time has flown by. It really does just seem like yesterday when I got the call telling me what I already felt in my heart. Though much has changed, much has also stayed the same. I still get up every day and work, they boys still come over as scheduled, Jeff still travels (albeit less than before) I still make dinners and clean the house and fold laundry. In the grand scheme of things…it’s all pretty much the same.

What has changed the most for me is the way I approach every day. I always considered myself a pretty positive person. Sure I had bad days and bad attitudes just like everyone else, but for the most part I always remembered “things could be worse” and that mantra kept me moving forward. I still use that mantra today. Things really could be worse. I’m incredibly fortunate and blessed to have handled chemo as well as I have. Short of a bad week when I caught a nasty virus, I’ve felt normal. Even my level of fatigue is not what I imagine (feared?) it would be.

The change in my attitude has been one of gratefulness. I spend more time simply taking time. I pay more attention to things. I observe vibrant fall colors a little longer. I’m quieter. I appreciate the sun more. I contemplate. I watch what I eat. I think…a lot…

I have really great days and I have really lousy ones too. The lousy ones aren’t often, but they do come and I deal with them as best I know how. I’m incredibly blessed to have an amazing husband by my side through it all. He knows exactly when I need a break and exactly when I need to get my ass of the couch…even though sometimes I don’t want to hear what he has to say, he’s normally right. (Someone tell him I wrote that because he isn’t likely to read something this long…HaHaHa!!)

This Thursday marks week 7 of Taxol and 11 chemo treatments overall. I’ll finish with chemo the week of Thanksgiving – a holiday has never seemed so far away. Like I said, I’m still tolerating chemo very well. I’ve had some muscle pain on day 2 after chemo but nothing severe. I get occasional sharp bone pain but again, nothing that is long lasting or requiring any sort of medication. Let’s hope it’s smooth sailing right into Thanksgiving.

Team HagyThe Making Strides Walk with Team Hagy was a GIANT success a few weeks back. THANK YOU to everyone who attended and donated to the event. I just looked at the website today and Team Hagy is 2nd in fundraising by $18!!! I did receive an email that donations are accepted through December 31 but I’m unsure if any donations now directly affect our team…I’m also not sure if the donations from the day of the walk have been entered.

Either way – we raised an amazing amount to support for the ACS…$3,649.00!!!!

I’m SO excited to see you all on Saturday!!!  There’s still plenty of time to join this awesome group ~ keep reading to find out how you can join our team.

I’ll be at SCSU by 8am on Saturday.  If you ordered a Tshirt and need to get it before the walk, please plan to arrive by 8:15.  There are events going throughout the morning that I’ll be a part of so I want to get shirts taken care of before those things start.  If you already have your shirt, you’ll want to arrive no later than 8:45am as the walk starts at 9:00 sharp.

We’ll be meeting in the “basement” of the main gym on SCSU campus, also known as the Fieldhouse.  There will be a million billion signs directing you down there, but if you get lost, just ask someone for the Fieldhouse.  FREE parking is available at the gym or the hockey center just down the road, there’s also street parking in the area.

When you get there Saturday morning you will need to check in, even though you’ve registered online.  Should take no more than a couple minutes.  If you’re a cancer survivor – you’ll also want to head over to the Survivor Tent to receive your gift.

Here’s the link for information on parking, morning events, walk route and all that fun stuff:

If you have a family member, friend, coworker, or whomever thinking of walking – they DO need to register.  They can register on Saturday morning, or they can register online here:

After the walk we’ll head downtown some food, drink and fun.  If you have to head out right after the walk, that’s perfectly fine.  If you can stick around, even better.

The Washington Triplet Series

The Washington Triplet series is made up of three distinct stories, each matching the tone and individuality of each sister.  We follow each sister as she starts a new life in a new state, creating their own unique path in life and find love.  All three stories take place over the same period of time, six months after the death of their mother, and six weeks before their father is to be married.  Each novella is written by a different author, but manage to keep similarities throughout so well that you’ll forget there’s someone new writing as you move through the series.

Love Discovered in New York - Front CoverMya starts her new life in New York City working as a bartender in a busy night club.  She meets sexy tattoo artist and shop owner Colton Davis during his nephew’s 21st birthday party and the two have an instant attraction.  Mya has always been considered the rebel by her sisters, the wild card.  She describes herself as “loud, brash and outspoken.  I loved things that made me happy and rejected things that didn’t.”  Mya and Colton’s story is hot, steamy, sexy and tumultuous with a little bit of sweet added in for good measure, reminding me a little of the “Fixed” books by Laurelin Page.  While Mya tries hard to keep Colton a ‘one time thing’ she quickly realizes he’s good for her and begins to understand she may be open to trusting a man to handle her rebel heart.  PURCHASE:

Love Grows in Alaska - Front CoverMarisa has long been considered the responsible “good girl” by her sisters.  She has chosen to start her new path in life in Alaska working as an HR Assistant.  She meets Zach Greer ever so briefly near the beginning of the story in an elevator and she immediately develops a crush on his tall, dark and handsome figure.  Amazingly, the two come face to face a couple more times before they end up at dinner together where Marisa thinks to herself “I seriously want to rip my heart out and toss it on the table.  He can have it, steal it and captivate it forever.”  (So funny!!)  Marisa learns Zach is also dealing with loss and disappointment and together they learn to fall in love.  Marisa and Zach’s story is sweet, romantic and loving, reminding me of a “Heart of Montana” book by Katy Rengery.  PURCHASE:

Love Found in California - Front CoverMikala has been reserved and closed off for years following an event the summer after her senior year of high school.  While her sisters and family always knew something was “off”, no one ever really knew the entire story of what made her so quiet and shy.  Mikala is starting her life over under the orange and yellow sunsets of California working as an animation designer.  The owner of the company, Ryan Chambers, quickly catches Mikala’s eye making her feel more comfortable and alive than she has for years.  The two have a lightning fast love story and romantically marry shortly after meeting.  Mikala’s story is the most complete and we learn the most about her and her parents through flashbacks.  She is also the most terrified to go back home to her father’s wedding because of the “possibility that the one who took more from me than I ever gave will most likely be there.”  But with Ryan standing tall and strong by her side, she knows she can handle anything.  This book is reminiscent of “The Words” books by Georgina Guthrie.  PURCHASE:

I love that each story is very unique from the other giving the reader a completely different take on the story of the triplets’ father, his new fiancée and their mother.  I adored the sisters as each hold a piece of myself in their stories.  The males in each read are the perfect mix of alpha, romantic and loving giving us even more book boyfriends to swoon over.

This is an “easy reading” series and all three novella’s could be read in a short amount of time – I read them all over the course of a few days.  I enjoyed the fact that while each story focuses on the new men in each girls’ life, it also highlights the new friendships each Washington sister is forming as well.  These are truly stories of starting over and learning to live on your own two feet.

DANIELLE ALLEN ~ AUTHOR BIO:  I am a married event planner, life coach and instructor.  Between my awesome friends and family and my amazing husband, I am constantly surrounded by love.  My goal at all times is to love what I’m doing and enjoy life.  I love shopping and football with equal fervor.  I’m an amateur movie critic (i.e. my husband and I watch and critique a lot of movies for fun). I love to read, but since I’ve been writing, I don’t read as much as I used to. I love music. A good lyric with a good melody can paint a vivid picture and invoke such a range of emotions. I have a soft spot for most mediums of creative, artistic expression. But music is probably my favorite.

Cutting your cancer risk

I rarely watch TV during the day.  For one, I work from home and if the TV is on…I’m tempted to watch it.  For two, there’s crap on TV.

However, I’m not feeling well today so I’m here on the couch so I thought I’d watch a little Dr. Oz.  Low and behold the first segment of his show was about cutting cancer risk.  Hello!!!  I immediately opened a word document and started taking notes so I could share some information here for you.  Simple changes can make a HUGE difference…

Stomach Cancer

Do you…

  • Eat at a restaurant 2 more times week
  • Eat canned foods 3 more times week
  • Eat processed or packaged foods 3 more times week

Yes?  3 times the risk of developing stomach cancer – why?

  • Increase in salt intake which changes the lining of your stomach and makes your stomach more susceptible to infection

What can you do?

  • RINSE canned foods (lowers salt content by 40%)
  • Dilute broth with water (lowers sodium)
  • Go out to eat only once a week
  • Cut processed foods – such as luncheon meat and frozen meals
  • Use salt alternatives – such as garlic powder or other non-salt seasonings

Colon Cancer

Do you…

  • Eat dairy most days a week
  • Feel you get enough vitamin D and calcium

NO?  Then you have an increased risk of colon cancer

What can you do?

  • Get more vitamin D – 10 min of sunlight a day, take a supplement, eat more greens
  • Eat foods high in calcium
  • See a list of foods high in Vitamin D and Calcium here

Pancreatic Cancer

20,000 women die every year

Risk factors:

  • Have high blood sugar
  • Overweight

These lead to an increased risk due to high insulin/high blood sugar levels

Create a diet with a low-glycemic index that includes…

  • Avocado
  • Broccoli
  • Shrimp
  • Hummus
  • Sesame seeds
  • Peanuts
  • Sweet potatoes – bake, steam, or roast. Do not boil or fry – you will lose the nutrients

Update on my health –

Round 4I’ve now gone through 4 rounds of Taxol, so I’ve completed 8 rounds of chemo in total.  This puts me at the HALF WAY POINT in my entire chemo treatment plan – HOORAY!!!

After round 3 of Taxol, my doctor asked me to track my fevers for 5 days as he wanted to see if I was indeed fighting a virus, or if the fevers were a response to the chemo.  Low grade fevers are a side-effect of Taxol, but at times my fevers were up over 102 (not good).  After 5 full days of tracking I rarely had a time when my fever was below 100.  Needless to say, it was a really crappy 5 days.  On day 5, I was put on a Z-Pak of antibiotics that I finished yesterday.

I’m happy to report that while I did have some low grade fevers Saturday, for the most part, I’m feeling better.  I do think I was fighting a sinus infection as I’ve been dealing with massive sinus pressure and still coughing quite a bit.  I’ve been spending lots of time resting, eating lots of chicken soup (thanks Deb!), and drinking lots of water and Gatorade.  It’s pretty boring, but I am finally starting to feel a little more normal…and not like a character out of The Walking Dead.  Jeff has been super amazing taking care of me, I really don’t know what I’d do without him.

Moving forward I’ll continue with chemo once a week (generally on Thursday’s) finishing up the week of Thanksgiving.  After that, I’ll have about 3 weeks off, then surgery will be scheduled to remove what’s left of the lump (not much, not much at all) then radiation for about 6 weeks (and…breathe…)

Thanks to everyone who ordered “Team Hagy” t-shirts, I got the notice they shipped today!!  The Breast Cancer Walk is coming up October 18.  Those of you walking – please be sure to check the Event on Facebook for updates.  We’ll be meeting at 8:15am that morning in the Fieldhouse (downstairs) at St. Cloud State University.  There’s a short program at 8:30am and the walk begins at 9:00am.  The walk will go on rain, snow, sleet or shine…so please be prepared to attend no matter what!!

I’m also THRILLED to announce we have SMASHED our team fundraising goal!!!  THANK YOU to everyone who donated ~ a special thank you to my mom who worked her butt off and got over $600 in donations from her coworkers…amazing!!!

There is still time to register to walk and/or donate ~ you can do both here.

As always, THANK YOU for your support.  I still get emails, texts, calls, Facebook notes, tweets, IG posts almost every single day – I really cannot tell you how much that means to both Jeff and I.  We appreciate and love every single one of you.

Until next time ~ “There are moments when troubles enter our lives and we can do nothing to avoid them.  But they are there for a reason. Only when we have overcome them will we understand why they were there.”

Book Blitz ~ Stand Close by Sabrina Lacy

New Book Blitz Banner

Money. Lots of it. Fifty Million Dollars… left to her from out of nowhere from a father she didn’t know she had.

But that money comes with a price – Jack and Sean Stone. The Stone Brothers who were just gorgeous unattainable faces on magazines, up until the morning one of them shows up on Rue’s doorstep, drunk and pissed off. Jack’s growl, “You’ll be hearing from my lawyer,” sends a jolt of shock to Rue’s system that ricochets into a whole new life. One Jack doesn’t want her to have.

Rockstar Alec Gabriel is the Stone Brothers best friend. Has been since childhood. Their bond needs no words. So when Jack suggests he make his newest target for heartache, Rue Calliwell, Alec signs on out of curiosity, not expecting that meeting her will be the greatest challenge he’s ever had.

Part 2 will be released on 9/28 and Part 3 will be available on 10/9.  Both are available for preorder.  Amazon   UK

Rue book 1“How old are you?” The famous Jack Stone growls, his angry stare ripping down my body. I glance down out of instinct, horrified to remember I’m wearing my ugly pair of sweats and a shirt that is a couple sizes too large. It’s comfy to sleep in, but I vow as of this moment to throw it away as soon as I figure out what the hell is going on.

“What?” I sound as confused as I am, plus I’m kicking myself for not putting on makeup before I opened the door. At least some lipstick or something. And I haven’t brushed my teeth either. But it’s only 8:00 a.m. so can you blame me?

“You’re Rue Calliwell, right?” I nod. His gorgeous eyes narrow into sexy slits and he repeats in a low guttural growl, “How old are you?”

I look past him, scanning the sidewalk to see if we’re on camera. This is a joke right? I meet his eyes, and answer, quietly, “Yesterday was my twenty-first birthday.”

For some inconceivable reason this inspires a slew of swear words to pour from his beautiful mouth, ending with, “FUCK! I can’t fucking believe this fucking shit.” And with that, he flips around and sways his way to the street, only once almost falling.

What is happening?!! “Hey!” He doesn’t turn, so I try louder. “HEY!!!” Oops. That sounded a little harsh.

He turns around. No, that’s not correct. He turns just his head around and those intense light green eyes of his peer over his shoulder. “Did you just yell at me?”

Now I’m getting irritated. Why the attitude? “Excuse me, but you can’t wake me up and ask how old I am and then just walk off, swearing, without explanation.”

He walks back and glares at me. My skin lights up with nervous fire as he gets closer, each step excruciatingly slow. His eyes rake over me again, this time from the ground up. I cross my arms, and gulp, standing a little straighter, my chin cocked out in defiance. He reaches up and touches my shoulder as if he has the right. I’m so shocked, I say nothing. He’s staring at his thumb as it swipes against the baggy cotton twice before retracting. With him this close, I can see where his stubble has been recently shaved off. I can see his scar that slices into one eyebrow from the car accident he was in seven years ago when he was sixteen, the one the whole world knows about. When I totaled my car, the only people who knew about it were the guy I ran into and my mother. And my insurance company who danced in their swivel chairs as they hiked up my premium.

When Jack does something, it’s news.

So is there a news crew watching this? Because, from the reaction my body is having, he’s doing something right now, inspecting me like this. I’ve never been this close to someone famous, someone I’ve admired for years. Someone I feel like I’ve grown up with. It’s like a dream has become real. I open my mouth to say something–ask why he’s here, how he knows my name, why he’s so perfect. But I seem to have lost my ability to think straight.

“Are you about to kiss me?” I whisper, holding very still.

Like he won a battle I didn’t know I was fighting, He smirks and says the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard. “My lawyer will be calling you.”

Kissing Santa ~ a review

KylieGilmore_KissingSanta_600x900This is the adorable holiday themed story of Samantha Dixon and Rico del Toro.  Samantha and Rico find themselves on a dinner date after begrudgingly agreeing to be set up by their meddling mothers.  While the date is less than successful, the two can’t deny they find one another attractive and when Samantha unwittingly finds herself confessing all of her wishes to “Santa” (aka Rico), he devises a plan to make all her Christmas dreams come true.

Rico being the macho man he is, has never had the desire (or need) to go out of his way to seduce a woman.  A few strums of his guitar, a couple smiles, a compliment or two and he finds women falling into bed with him.  Samantha, however, is different.  She’s tough, suspicious and downright sexy.  Rico quickly learns he’s going to have to pull out all the stops to get Samantha in his life, and in his bed.

Rico attempts to grant all of Samantha’s wishes in one date, but she’s no dummy and realizes very early what he’s trying to do.  She’s annoyed, thinking he only wants to get her into bed and he’s annoyed, thinking she’s ungrateful.

Following the failed date, his sisters’ recommend reading romance novels and watching RomComs…thus begins a hilarious courtship including orange tic tacs, ladders and roses and sharing a spaghetti noodle.  But, Samantha is smart and quickly catches on to his movie references, again accusing him of being unoriginal.

Can Rico prove to Samantha he’s really attracted to her?  Can Samantha trust the handsome playboy?  Is Rico really in love?  Will Samantha give Rico another chance to woo her?

This is the second book by Kylie I’ve read (the first was “Bad Taste In Men” reviewed here).  I absolutely adored this read.  It was quick, funny, sexy and got me in the Christmas spirit.  Samantha and Rico are a great couple that keep one another all riled up in more ways than one, and their sexual tension is super hot.

One of my favorite parts of the book is when Rico thinks he’s having heart trouble and visits the doctor.  After explaining his symptoms the doctor checks him out and begins asking him a set of questions…what happened next had me laughing out loud, as with many other parts in the book.

I read this book in a little over a day and I actually could have read it faster had I not had a crazy little thing called “a job”.  This is a wonderfully smart, quick read that is perfect for a car ride to a holiday gathering…and a great excuse to hide away and read a few pages when the family gets to be too much.

If you enjoy a determined hero and a smart mouthed heroine, you’ll love Kylie’s books.  She creates wonderful characters that keep you entertained and flipping pages as fast as you can.  Her writing is witty and the banter between all the characters is funny, charming, sweet and sexy.
